Based on Henrik Ibsen's epic poem, A MAN THERE WAS (TERJE VIGEN) was directed by and stars Victor Sjostrom as the headstrong sailer Terje, who takes on a British blockade in order to find food for his family and the small fishing village in which they live. But when he is captured by the British and imprisoned, leaving his family and other villagers to die from hunger, Terje's desire for revenge grows into an uncontrollable fury.

Considered to be one of the crowning achievements in Swedish silent film, A Man There Was cemented Sjostrom's reputation as a director (and actor) of the highest caliber. The Swedish Film Institute has provided a restored digital print for this rare screening, which has live accompaniment from acclaimed band The Poor Nobodys, whose scores have accompanied the films of Sergei Eisenstein and Douglas Fairbanks (among many others) at theaters around town.
